A New Hobby

I just started a new hobby.  I am now a lamp maker.  Why?  I don’t really know, it just seemed like a good idea.  Normally my creativity runs in the direction of making music, but lately my life has been so crazy that all I seem to have time to do is go to work and go to bed.  My musical outlet has been singing along with Mumford and Sons on my MP3 player.

Whiskey

This is my first creation.  For Christmas a good friend of mine gave me a bottle of Crown Royal.  I thought this bottle is really too pretty to throw away, also the label was perfectly intact.  I filled the bottle with bag of colored stones I had picked up at a local craft store.  The hardware and the lampshade came from Lowes.  You can’t really tell from this picture, but the stones sort of look like the color of whiskey.

GrinderThis is the real piece de resistance.  An old meat grinder turned into a lamp, with an old colander as a lamp shade.  It looks really cool with the light shining on the wall through the holes in the colander.  This wasn’t too tough, I took a hacksaw to cut the clamp off.  Then I took a 7/16 drill and cleaned out the hole that the clamp was threaded through.  After that, all that was left to do was to assemble the electrical hardware and plug it in.

I can’t wait to work on the next project.  We have another grinder, but sadly no more old colanders.  Also I hope to make a hanging lamp out of some old box cheese graters and some old wood.  And we have a old milk can and strainer that I plan on making into a floor lamp.  It should be fun.

Welcome to my world

I’ve decided to get into this blogging thing.  When it comes to technology and all things geeky I am usually on the bleeding edge, limited only by my budget.  These days it seems like I am very limited.

Head shot

What will I be posting about here?  Who knows?  I have been known to ramble on about almost any topic that catches my fancy.  I suppose that I can start by giving you a little information about myself.

I’m soon to be 53 years old, I have 25+ years in the IT field and I am a self described nerd.  I have a BS in Accounting.  My wife and I live on a small 5 acre hobby farm, where I grow my own vegetables, and raise my own chickens (for meat and eggs.)  I am a singer and a tuba player who will do just about anything to get in front of an audience.  These days, due to the rotten economy, I am doing production work on a rotating shift, despite my IT experience and accounting degree.  That’s the way life goes it seems.  Anyways I can’t think of much else to say, except welcome to my little corner of the blogosphere.
